With its characteristic bark formed of multiple detachable layers and its evergreen leaves with a subtle fragrance, this singular tree is a precious source of essential oil. Also known as "goménol", in homage to the port of Gomen in New Caledonia, niaouli essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves of the tree.
